Serenity: Finding a State of Peace Within Yourself

The quest for inner peace has been at the forefront of my life for the past 10 years.

When I found myself overwhelmed with life’s demands, pressure at work and chaos in the surrounding world, I began to ask myself — how can a person find a sense of calm and inner peace today?

Is it even possible?

To answer my own prayers, I set off on a personal journey to find inner peace.

To begin, I had to define what exactly I was looking for.

I wanted — serenity.

Serenity is the state of being calm and peaceful.

But what I learned, is that serenity is not just the absence of chaos or stress; it is a connection to the deep, still waters of peace within oneself.

You see, I was constantly being tossed and turned by what was going on around me, family drama, work demands, other people’s needs. I was more focused on what was happening outside of me, than what was happening inside of me.

This meant, I was more focused on what I could not control, than what I could control,

I had no center, no place within myself to return to for restoration, autonomy and prioritizing.

So I asked myself, how can I cultivate this space of calm centeredness within myself?

I had to find this place of unwavering security within my own body, mind and spirit — no matter how stormy the surface might be.

Paths to Serenity

Each person is on their own journey, so the the lessons they are here to learn and the things that cause them inner turmoil are unique to them.

One person may be learning to open up and create relationships, while another person may be learning to create boundaries, and make more space for themselves.

Depending on our life experiences, the season we are currently in, and our personal intentions for growth, we will each be led down a personal road.

While to path to serenity is not the same for everyone, there are a few things that almost everyone can benefit from to open themselves up to an inner space of peace:

  1. Mindfulness and Meditation: Regular meditation practices, even just a few minutes a day, can help anchor us in the present moment. Mindfulness, the act of being fully present in whatever you’re doing, whether it’s washing dishes or listening to a friend, can pave the way to serenity.

  2. Nature Connection: Spend time outdoors. Whether it’s a park, a beach, mountains, or just your backyard, nature has a soothing effect on the mind and body. The sound of waves, the chirping of birds, or the rustling of leaves can instantly bring a sense of calm.

  3. Digital Detox: Take regular breaks from your devices. The constant influx of information, notifications, and digital demands can be overwhelming. Periodic digital detoxes can work wonders for your mental state.

  4. Physical Activity: Engage in activities that get your body moving, whether it's yoga, walking, dancing, or any other exercise. Physical activity releases endorphins, which are natural mood lifters.

  5. Simplicity: Declutter your space and mind. The practice of minimalism, where you focus on what truly matters and let go of excess, can bring a sense of order and tranquility.

  6. Gratitude: Regularly count your blessings. Maintaining a gratitude journal or simply taking a moment each day to acknowledge what you're thankful for can shift your focus from what's lacking or stressful to what's abundant and joyful in your life.

  7. Establish Boundaries: Learn to say "no." Protecting your time, energy, and mental space is essential for maintaining serenity.

As an artist, through the flow of paint, I decided to dive deep into the heart of what it means to truly feel at peace.

My Serenity artwork is an invitation to pause, reflect, and enter a realm of tranquil awareness.

In a world that feeds off busyness, stress and overwhelm, these pieces seek to shift perspectives.
